June 2023
Nestled in the wilds of Western Idaho is Shore Lodge – Idaho’s quintessential resort that has been a beacon of mountain-lake magic for the past 75 years. As we celebrate this monumental Anniversary, we invite you to embark on a nostalgic journey guided by the heartfelt recollections of those who have experienced the resort’s timeless charm. Join us as we delve into its legacy.
McCall Proud
If you’ve stayed with us in the past four years, you’ve surely spotted President and General Manager Tom E. Garcia walking the corridors of the resort. Since his tenure, Shore Lodge has been named into Condé Nast Traveler’s list of top 20 Mountain West resorts and attained the #1 spot as Best Hotel in Idaho for U.S. News & World Report. With a long-standing career in the hospitality industry across numerous high-end hotels, it’s no surprise that Tom has been at the helm of the resort’s continuous success.
Like many others, the resort’s 75th Anniversary holds a special meaning to Tom. When he engages with the McCall community, he is delighted to listen to their Shore Lodge memories that are woven into the very fabric of its legacy.
“Legacy – it’s a property that creates lots of memories, it’s a property that brings families together, and it’s a property where you sit around and break bread,” said Garcia. “Just as I spoke to guests at the 75th Anniversary Cocktail Hour, people shared what they’ve done and what this place means. I can see it in their expressions that in their hearts, it’s a place that’s so warm and genuine, and I think that’s the most significant piece.’
Heartfelt Memories
Given Shore Lodge’s undeniable charm, Director of Lodging John Wood shares tales of a few encounters that have left an inspirational mark on his career.
One evening, John was helping at The Bar, and in came a young man. Visibly nervous, John asked the young man if he wanted a glass of water. Pointing to the right, he responds, “I’m about to ask him if I can marry his daughter.” John recalls another inspiring story of a couple who sought solace in the embrace of McCall’s serene beauty one last time amid the husband’s battle with cancer. “We’ve been to McCall before, and we – my husband has cancer, and he just wanted to make sure we had the chance to be in McCall one more time,” said the wife.
To create moments like that for our guests is an honor. These are the kind of instances that resonate the most with John and the entire staff.
For Future Generations
Dan Scott, Executive Vice President at Alscott and Former General Manager of the resort marvels at the property’s seamless blend of luxury and approachability. With its panoramic mountain-lake views and impeccable amenities, Shore Lodge becomes a sanctuary of rest and restoration for guests walking within the property. Dan recognizes the resort’s responsibility to ensure that future generations can revel in the same magical experiences that have charmed visitors for decades.
“You know, I think the resort is in a great place. I think it’s luxury, but it’s still approachable to Idahoans and people from the West, and it feels good when you’re here, and I think our offerings are spectacular,” said Scott. “I think we just need to keep providing that experience for the next generation of little kids playing on the beach and 25-year-old couples getting married here.”
Our guests are the most important aspect of our philosophy, and when we have lifelong guests that continue to build memories with us, it speaks volumes about our work.
Lifelong Guests
Meet Gregg and Sallee Middlekauff, two incredible Idaho residents, and lifelong resort guests. Sallee recalls spending summers in McCall throughout her childhood and adulthood, making it an irreplaceable fixture.
Gregg fondly reminisces about the authentic food and provisions at The Bar and dining with us for the holidays. The couple’s connection to Shore Lodge is evident as they share the story of their son’s wedding. A year before his engagement, Sallee spoke with Shore Lodge’s Wedding Specialist and booked the lower pavilion. She knew that dates fill up quickly and wanted to ensure she was prepared.
When their son and now daughter-in-law got engaged, they also inquired with Shore Lodge about wedding dates to find out there were no reservations available. The catering manager then said, “Wait a minute, what did you say your name was? Sallee Middlekauff has a wedding here on the 19th of July.” They looked at each other and said, “I guess we’re getting married on the 19th of July.” “You shouldn’t do that, but I did,” said Sallee. Kudos to supportive moms!
As we continue exploring Shore Lodge’s legacy, the stories interweave like threads, each adding depth to the fabric of the resort’s history. From romantic proposals to joyful family gatherings, Shore Lodge has witnessed countless moments unfolding within its historic grounds.
